But no, if you do end up with a malicious addon, there's a number of things that can be done without any online connection or malicious intents that could be built in that possibly create their own connection through game bugs. None of these things are particularly easy, and I'd imagine that's why it's so rare. Basically, a classic 'hey, download this and then join this' bait and switch. It could collect data which can then be accessed by a server that's intimately familiar with how the plugin functions, as one example. ![]() Otherwise troll you in singleplayer ways that don't crudely suck up your resources or more intricately attempt to make an online connection. ![]() Effectively, the malicious plugin sends out a 'hey, I'm here' broadcast, and through another hole made through the same plugin, remote input could come back in. When that signal is recieved, another hole involving the plugin could be used to get into your computer. open an actual backdoor that allows your game to send a signal to the coder's choice of remote server. drain your computer's resources because the maker was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and just wanted to troll That is a simplistic approach that only considers one theory out of many, many possibilities.Ī malicious addon, if created properly, could theoretically I was only thinking of the backdoors that happen if you use it on a server that will redirect you to another server when people join yours. There is always potential for enough rogue code to exist that the addon itself can use to connect to a remote server.
